Magic WandAKA: Magician's thighboneRumph claimed that a true magic wand was made from the right thighbone of another magician. This one has something in it which rattles when it's shaken and has all sorts of magical symbols on it from various cultures, including an erect phallus, a vagina, and a dragon. Produced: ? This piece was incredibly tough to make. Most of the castings broke upon firing. It measures 18 inches long and is covered with magical symbols including a dragon. When Jim gave me this piece he claimed that the hole in one end was for hanging. (More likely, it was because the piece was cast towards the end of the run.) Added by Lydia Marano from Los Angeles, CA on 12/02/2003 I have one too, which he gave me, but I understand they are rare. They were tough to fire because the narrow middle would get blocked with slip mud and cause uneven heating of the air at either end, causing them to explode in the kiln - which also ruined other pieces, alas. I remember one firing where there were tiny bubbles in the glaze which caused him to break all the pieces with gleeful abandon. He was fussy about the pieces he fired himself, though the commercial producers were less fastidious. Added by Jim Kelly from Los Angeles, CA on 07/07/2008 |
