Gelett Burgess

This is likely a one-of-a-kind piece that is hand-built and not from a mold.

Gelett most famous for this one (regrettable) poem, which haunted him for the rest of his life.

The back of the tankard reads:

I never saw a purple cow
I never hope to see one;
But I can tell you, anyhow,
I'd rather see than be one!

Hand built vessel 5 1/4" tall - not a mug as there is no handle - out of two colors of clay. Full relief portrait of the poet in white with his name and most famous work carved in low relief out of darker clay on the body. Not from a mold. Signature scratched on the bottom. Undated. Perfect condition.

Added Information:

Jim Rumph gave this to me, presumably because I'm a poet. No idea what it was created for, but it's unique and quite unlike most of his work.
